CFLs in the Sherwin Household - One Family's Journey

My family thought I was crazy when I photographed the replacement of 55 incandescent light bulbs in our house with compact fluorescents. I tried out eleven different brands of bulbs and my wife selected the best ones that gave the truest color.

What Can the Mayor Do?

What can cities and towns do about climate change? What action can a mayor and city council take? What difference can one town make? This is a presentation I gave to the Menlo Park Rotary about effective local action. I continue to look for a city, county, PUC, utility or property manager to partner with on this issue. Selected Pages for Property Managers and Building Owners

Property managers and building owners often ask me, “What can I do to lower my utility bill?” Here are the most relevant pages from my book, Addicted to Energy, addressing this question. I have re-sequenced the pages, putting the suggestions that save the most money first. Almost every building in America can reduce its energy bill by 50% to 70%. Why not be a leader in your industry or town?

What the Mayor of New Orleans Should Do

In January 2010, I was asked to present for two hours to a class at Stanford planning a trip to New Orleans.  This presentation looks at the problem of climate change, and the solutions, from the viewpoint of a mayor of a coastal city in harm's way. It contains some disturbing maps from the University of Arizona on coastal flooding, but its focus is solutions that a large city can implement—if it is really motivated. This is probably the longest presentation I have ever given; it is a 6MB download.

Lighting 101 for Policymakers

Lighting systems are the "low hanging fruit" of conservation. Yet most homeowners and building owners continue to use outdated energy hogs. This document outlines the state and federal policies required to motivate homeowners and building owners to install great systems, saving everyone money and helping protect the environment.

Also see the related PowerPoint, "CFLs in the Sherwin Household" which is a practical guide for homeowners.
