Foundational Reading

Picture
With Speed and Violence
Why Scientists Fear Tipping Points in Climate Change
by Fred Pearce
Factual, straightforward, well-written, and fascinating. Published in 2007 by one of Britain's leading science writers, this is one of the best books ever written on the topic of climate change.

Plan B 4.0
Mobilizing to Save Civilization (Substantially Revised)
by Lester Brown
Brown does an extraordinary job describing solutions that have worked around the world. This is foundational reading for anyone involved in policymaking or climate science.

Videos

Bill Gates on Energy

This is Bill Gates' 2010 speech at the TED conference on “Energy Miracles.” It is an excellent overview of the problem with a surprise ending: Gates is personally funding research into a nuclear power technology that will consume the waste from old nuclear power plants.

Everything Lives Where Trees Live

Deforestation is a major threat to both the world’s rich and poor. The Eden Reforestation Project has done several award-winning videos, which are posted on their website.  This 2½ minute video is my favorite. Factual, dramatic and engaging, I like that it talks about America’s problems during the Dust Bowl, as well as the current problems in the tropics.

How It All Ends

Greg Craven, a high school science teacher, explains global warming. Complete with fireworks and special effects, this video is an explanation of the "precautionary principle." The pyrotechnics are little dramatic, but his logic is well thought out. I'll bet his science classes are interesting.

Useful Web Sites

RealClimate.org - A web site run by climate scientists for the general public and journalists. Focus: climate science.

FYPower.org - Partnership of California’s utilities, businesses, government agencies, and nonprofits. Focus: practical steps for homeowners, businesses, industry, farmers, and ranchers.

GreenerChoices.org - From Consumer Reports. Focus: Products.

TreeHugger.com - From the people who bring you the Discovery Channel. Focus: anything interesting, new, or quirky.

The Union of Concerned Scientists, www.ucsusa.org - Focus: Climate change, clean vehicles, clean energy, nuclear power, and nuclear proliferation

C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, www.c40cities.org - Focus: Best practices from cities around the world. This London-based organization’s site has case studies from around the world about buildings, lighting, ports, transportation, waste, water and renewables. The case studies should be helpful to policy makers at all levels of government, but especially to city governments.  Some of the case studies are fascinating.

For Skeptics

Perhaps you, family members, or colleagues continue to have doubts about the reality of global warming and climate change. Here is a short list of resources that may help you with your doubts or help others you know.

Best Overview of the Scientific Evidence
Woods Hole Research Center
Clear explanations, good graphics.

Best Summary of the 111 Most Common Arguments
Skeptical Science
Examines the science and arguments of global warming skepticism. Common objections like "global warming is caused by the sun," "temperature has changed naturally in the past" or "other planets are warming, too" are examined to see what the science really says.

Best Call to Action for Conservatives
Senator John McCain’s June 15, 2006 address to the Symposium on Climate Change
I quoted the last three paragraphs of this speech at the beginning of my book. Every conservative in America should read this.

Best Call to Action for Christians
The Evangelical Climate Initiative, ChristiansAndClimate.org
The “learn” section of this site is excellent and has links to some of the world’s most trustworthy web sites.
